Mixter Right-Angle Forceps — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Mixter exists to get behind things. Its jaw turns through a full right angle, letting the surgeon pass the tip around the back of a vessel or duct, grasp a ligature on the far side and draw it through — a manoeuvre that a straight or gently curved clamp cannot perform. It is equally used for blunt dissection to develop a plane behind a structure before dividing it.
The right-angle bend is the hardest part of the instrument to manufacture correctly, because the jaws must still meet accurately at the tip after being formed through 90 degrees. A Mixter whose tips gape at the angle cannot pick up a fine ligature.
