Richardson Retractors — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Richardson holds the abdominal wall itself. Its blade turns at a sharp right angle and is comparatively short and deep, which lets it hook the muscular wall of the abdomen and hold it open — a heavier job than the wound-edge retraction a Langenbeck performs. It is a standard component of laparotomy sets, usually supplied in graduated blade sizes.
Because the Richardson works against the full weight of the abdominal wall, handle strength and the blade-to-handle joint are load-bearing. This is not a pattern where a thin, light construction is acceptable.

Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
