The Sistrunk is a robust dissecting scissor built for work around the neck, where tissue planes are dense and the dissection must be firm but controlled. The blades are heavier than a Metzenbaum but finer than a Mayo, filling the gap where a delicate scissor would flex and a heavy one would be clumsy. They are used well beyond their eponymous procedure as a general heavy-dissection pattern.
Blade rigidity is what distinguishes this pattern in use. A dissecting scissor that flexes under load loses its cutting line, so the blade section is deliberately more substantial than the fine dissecting patterns it otherwise resembles.
