Brain Spatulas — Pattern and Clinical Use
Brain tissue cannot tolerate point pressure, so retraction is spread across a broad, smooth, flexible blade. The spatula is shaped by hand to the required curve, placed against the brain, and usually held by a self-retaining retractor arm. Its malleability lets the surgeon match the blade exactly to the anatomy rather than forcing tissue to conform to a fixed instrument.
Malleability with springback is the manufacturing challenge: the blade must hold the shape it is bent to, without cracking, through repeated bending and autoclaving cycles. Surfaces must be perfectly smooth since they sit directly against cortex.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Brain Spatulas from 316L austenitic stainless. Blades are cycle-bent to confirm they hold their formed shape without cracking, and all surfaces polished since they contact cortex directly. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on malleability without cracking, surface polish, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
