Dural Hooks — Pattern and Clinical Use
The dura must be opened without injuring the brain beneath it, and the two are separated only by a fraction of a millimetre. The dural hook engages the dura at a single point and lifts it into a tent, creating a safe space so the blade or scissors can incise the membrane without touching cortex. It is a small instrument doing a step where the margin for error is minimal.
The hook tip must be sharp enough to engage dura reliably at first attempt — repeated attempts risk the very injury the technique avoids — while the curve must lift rather than tear. Ball-tipped variants are used for blunt dural manipulation.

Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on tip sharpness and curve under magnification, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
