Kerrison Rongeurs — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Kerrison is the defining instrument of spinal decompression. Its thin footplate slides beneath the lamina or ligament, and the upper blade shears down against it, removing a precise bite of bone with the footplate protecting the dura and nerve root underneath. That protected shearing action is what allows bone to be removed millimetres from neural tissue.
Footplate thickness is the critical specification: a thinner footplate fits into a tighter space above the dura, but has less strength. Bite width and up-angle are the other ordering variables, and take-apart designs strip fully for reprocessing.
Kerrison Rongeurs Variants and Specifications
Standard Kerrison patterns.
| Variant | Specification / use |
|---|---|
| 1–2 mm bite | Fine decompression close to neural tissue |
| 3–5 mm bite | General laminectomy |
| 40 degree up-angle | Standard spinal approach |
| 90 degree up-angle | Steeper working angle |
| Thin footplate | Tighter space above the dura |
| Take-apart design | Strips fully for reprocessing |
Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Kerrison rongeurs from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Blade-to-footplate clearance is gauged so bone shears cleanly, and take-apart mechanisms cycled to confirm reassembly is positive. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on blade-to-footplate clearance, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
Who Sources Kerrison Rongeurs From Surgical Star
Kerrison rongeurs are the highest-value line in a spinal instrument range, ordered across several bite sizes and angles, with take-apart versions increasingly specified by sterile services.
OEM, Certification and Ordering
Every Kerrison rongeurs can be produced as a private-label line: your logo laser-marked on the shank, your catalog numbers, and your own printed packaging, manufactured from your drawings or a reference sample. Manufactured under an ISO 13485 quality system, CE-marked to EU MDR 2017/745 and covered by US FDA establishment registration. A certificate of conformity and an ASTM F899 material certificate for the exact steel grade ship with your order.
MOQs are low and new-brand friendly, and vary with pattern, finish and branding. Pricing is direct from the factory and tiered by volume. After you approve a branded pre-production sample, bulk production typically runs four to six weeks and ships worldwide DDP with HS codes handled. See how OEM & private label works →

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the footplate do?
It slides beneath the bone and protects the dura and nerve root while the upper blade shears down against it, which is what allows bone removal close to neural tissue.
Why choose a thin footplate?
It fits into a tighter space above the dura, which matters in a stenotic canal — at the cost of some strength compared with a standard footplate.
Are take-apart Kerrisons worth it?
Sterile services departments increasingly specify them because the instrument strips fully for cleaning and inspection of the shearing mechanism.
Can you manufacture these under our own brand?
Yes — full OEM and private label. We laser-mark your logo and catalog numbers, pack in your branded boxes, and work from your drawings, tech pack or a reference sample, with a pre-production sample approved before any bulk run.
Send your pattern list, drawing or a reference sample and we’ll quote MOQ, pricing and lead time — standard catalog or fully private-label.
