Despite the name, these are used constantly in spinal surgery to remove intervertebral disc material through a small annular opening, as well as in transsphenoidal pituitary surgery. The long slim shaft reaches a deep target through a narrow corridor, and the cupped jaws take a defined bite of soft tissue rather than tearing it.
