Gigli Saws & Handles — Pattern and Clinical Use
The Gigli saw is a length of twisted wire with cutting edges along its whole length. Passed beneath the skull between two burr holes with a guide, and fitted with a handle at each end, it cuts the bone from the inside outward with a reciprocating pull. That inside-out cut is why it protects the dura better than a saw approaching from the outer surface.
The wire is a genuine consumable — it stretches, dulls and can fracture in use, so it is replaced rather than resharpened, and spare wires are always stocked alongside the handles. Handle security matters because a handle that slips off mid-cut is both dangerous and disruptive.

We forge Gigli Saws & handles from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Wire cutting edges and tensile strength are batch-tested, and handle attachment cycled, since a handle slipping mid-cut is hazardous. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on wire tensile strength and handle retention, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
