Beyond diagnostic biopsy, dermal punches are used to excise small lesions completely and to harvest follicular units in hair restoration. In hair transplantation the punch diameter is critical — typically under 1 mm — because the graft must include the follicle without excess surrounding tissue, and the donor site must heal without visible scarring.
Sub-millimetre punches used for follicular harvesting demand a different manufacturing standard from diagnostic punches: the wall must be very thin to minimise tissue displacement, yet the edge must stay sharp through many repeated cuts in a single session.
