In cryosurgery, lifting a pedunculated or superficial lesion away from underlying skin lets the freeze concentrate on the lesion and spares surrounding tissue. Cryo forceps do that, and some patterns are cooled themselves and applied directly to small lesions — the tip is chilled and touched to the target, freezing it by contact rather than by spray.
