Black’s Files — Pattern and Clinical Use
After an ingrown nail spike is removed, the sulcus is left rough and may retain nail debris that would cause recurrence. Black’s file is drawn along the sulcus to smooth the nail edge and clear the groove — a fine finishing step that reduces the chance of the nail growing back into the tissue.
The working ends are small and finely serrated, and both ends must be finished identically since the practitioner uses whichever suits the approach. Being used in an inflamed sulcus, edge smoothness on the non-cutting faces matters as much as the cut itself.

Material, Finish and Quality Control
We forge Black’s files from AISI 420 martensitic stainless. Both ends are cut and finished identically, and non-cutting faces polished since the file works inside an inflamed sulcus. Each batch passes Rockwell hardness testing, dimensional checks on end parity and side-face polish, and visual inspection under our ISO 13485 system before passivation and final finishing. Mirror and satin finishes are both available — satin is usually specified where glare under operating lights is a concern.
