The Schroeder is the reference cervical tenaculum found on most gynecology trays. Its sharp opposing teeth engage the anterior cervical lip and the ratchet maintains the hold, so the operator can apply steady traction throughout dilation and instrumentation without regripping. The pattern is also produced as a vulsellum with multiple teeth for a broader, less penetrating hold.
Tooth meshing is what determines whether the instrument holds under traction. Teeth that do not interlock exactly either fail to engage or tear through the cervical lip when tension is applied.
