The Weingart is the general handling plier of orthodontics. Its narrow, tapered serrated beaks grip an archwire firmly enough to guide it into molar tubes and bracket slots, tuck a distal end, or make a broad adjustment, without the beak bulk obstructing the view. It is used at nearly every appointment, which is why practices usually own several.
The serrations must grip archwire without nicking it. A nick in a stainless archwire is a stress raiser that can lead to fracture, so beak serration depth is a genuine clinical specification rather than a grip preference.
