Reusable metal cord clamps apply and hold occlusion during the delivery itself, while single-use plastic clamps remain on the neonatal stump until it dries. Both must apply enough pressure to occlude a compressible vessel-bearing structure without cutting through it.
For reusable instruments, jaw pressure and atraumatic surface are the specification. For the disposable clamps applied to the stump, secure latching is what matters — a clamp that opens after application is a genuine neonatal haemorrhage risk.
