The Graves pattern trades a slightly larger insertion profile for a noticeably better view. Its blades are wider and curve outward, which holds the lateral vaginal walls back more effectively — valuable in parous patients where lax walls tend to prolapse into the field and obscure the cervix. It is the preferred pattern for colposcopy and for procedures needing generous access.
Because the blades are wider, edge finish matters even more than on a narrow pattern: there is more blade in contact with mucosa, so any roughness is felt over a larger area.
